The Club Nàutic l’Escala and the Fundació Alive presented MedFoto, the first International Photography Contest of the Mediterranean. The event took place last Saturday 24th April as part of the first online talk of the Underwater Activities Section of the Club Nàutic l’Escala. MedFoto was born from the agreement signed by the Club Nàutic l’Escala and the Fundació Alive, on 5th February, according to which they agreed to work together to create a photographic competition with the aim of promoting environmental and human values of the Mediterranean Sea.

The sea and the Mediterranean Sea have been closely linked to the fishing village of l’Escala since the beginning. In fact, the Greeks landed on the Iberian Peninsula at Empúries, where their remains remind us every day of the importance of preserving their historical and cultural legacy of which the sea is one of its main backbones.

The sea that bathes our coasts is therefore very valuable. It is culture and history; a means of work and recreation for man and the habitat of thousands of species of animals and plants that make up its very special seascape. Values which have to coexist for the present and for future generations and which we can only preserve by enjoying and working at sea in a sustainable way.

An open competition

The Club Nàutic l’Escala and the Fundació Alive are presenting the result of months of work, a photography competition dedicated to all aspects of the Mediterranean Sea with the theme of The Sea and People. From the landscape to the marine life; from what is happening on the surface to what is going on under water; from professional nautical activities to sports ones. That is why there are seven categories in the competition, including one exclusively for images taken by mobile devices.

MedFoto is in addition a competition open to anyone who wants to take part: photography amateurs and professionals. All of them will be able to present up to 15 photographs in any of the categories of the competition. The registration and timeframe for submitting images will start next Saturday 1st May and will finish on 31st of the same month.

A collaborative project

The MedFoto competition is a joint initiative of the Club Nàutic l’Escala and the Fundació Alive. The Club Nàutic l’Escala is a non-profit sports association that aims to promote sports and recreational sailing by giving everyone access to the sea. The Fundació Alive is a private foundation that works to improve knowledge of biodiversity through the collection, cataloguing and dissemination of biological information.
The Town Hall of l’Escala supports the project as part of its constant efforts to promote local values and environments, as a tool to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

Check the rules of the competition and take part!
